Mental Health and Substance Use Challenges
Anthony’s life experiences have given him the adaptability to survive in any situation. In early life, he faced poverty and constantly changing circumstances, along with family struggles with mental and emotional health. He never liked school, despite a love of learning, and faced fighting and harassment for being placed into special education classes. He faced being placed into over 30 schools, and trouble with the police beginning at age 9. At age 17, he faced his first prison sentence of 10 years. Between sentences, he went to college, became a personal trainer, and used his hard-won fighting skills to teach Krav Maga and self-defense.
His early experiences have given him his fighting spirit, but also the deep question of why people are so cruel to each other for being different. Having been released from prison for the last time due to the early release drug program, he decided to never go back. He is now a criminal justice advocate and community organizer, appearing in the news and speaking to politicians in Madison about systemic injustice. He also gained his Peer Specialist certification and is continuing his training in this field.
Anthony’s fight is now for others who struggle. He is a tireless supporter for individuals going through hard times and substance use recovery. He brings his drive and energy, although with an engaging personality and constant wit, to help all those who don’t fit in.
